We produce high-quality screed that is used as a final floor covering and an excellent thermal insulator for both commercial and residential projects.

Concrete and Screed, What’s The Difference?

To an untrained eye, concrete and screed may look very similar. Both are made from the same basic mixtures, i.e. aggregates, cement and water.
But when it comes to their composition and thickness, one can clearly see a few differences. The type and size of aggregates used in concrete and screed are different. Both these construction materials also differ in their consistency and finishing.

Concrete finds application in structural construction works that require high strength and durability, such as floors, foundations, walls and beams.

Concrete has a rougher texture due to the incorporation of coarse aggregates and requires skilled individuals and special equipment to mix and apply.

Screed, however, has a smoother look and is often used as the top finishing layer over the concrete slab.

Being mixed with finer aggregates (usually sand), screed has a thinner texture that can be applied easily using a trowel for stylishly smooth flooring.

How To Tell if Screed Is High Quality

It is important to check the quality of the screed used to avoid screed failures. Though various factors determine its quality, the moisture content of screeds is extremely important.

By assessing moisture content, screed failures due to the drying up of screeds after application can be avoided.
The quality of the screed can also be determined by testing a few other parameters such as adhesion, crushing resistance, slip resistance and abrasion resistance.

At Carters, we supply semi-dry screeds that offer a high degree of accuracy and ease for application. We also provide screed mix retarders that slow down curing time, making the screed usable for 8-12 hours.

Traditional screeds take around 28 days to dry completely. Light foot traffic is allowed from 48 hours after laying, while site traffic can resume seven days after laying.

    Types of Screed

There are many types of floor screed: Bonded Screed, Unbonded Screed, Floating Screed, Liquid Screed and Underfloor Heating Screeds. Here’s a brief introduction about them:

    • Bonded screed– Here, a bonding agent or adhesive is used to install the screed over the slab/substrate.
    • Unbonded screed– In this type, the screed is not installed on the substrate directly but applied over a damp-proof membrane.
    • Liquid screed– Liquid screed is also known as a self-compacting screed and is quite popular for its quick setting properties.
    • Floating screed– This type of floor screed is laid over a slip membrane with thermal or acoustic insulation underneath.
    • Underfloor heating screed– A popular use of screed is to cover underfloor heating pipework for energy efficiency and good thermal insulation. Screed will heat efficiently, and hold in that heat for a good amount of time.

    Uses of Floor Screed

Here are some uses of screed.

Professional Floor Screeding for Concrete floor

Floor screeds are a popular and affordable choice for perfectly levelled floors. It is used to level concrete slabs that are uneven into smooth and flat surfaces.

    Screeding for Underfloor Heating

Floor screed is the ideal construction material for covering underfloor heating pipes. Screed laid over underfloor heating helps equal heat distribution in the building and efficient energy use.

    What is screed made of?

Screed is a thin mixture of cement and sharp sand in a 1:3 or 1:4:5 consistency. It may also contain latex and cementitious products, anhydrides and water for a smoother consistency.
